Opening Panel | Refocused & Right Sized – Is the Venture Industry Finally Back on Track?

Before the Internet arrived in full force in the mid to late ‘90s, the venture industry was seen as sized appropriately, generating good, if not solid returns, from focusing on enterprise-related companies. The success the VCs had with such companies as Netscape, Amazon, eBay and even Google changed the landscape in dramatic ways, leading to both increased capital coming into the asset class and a heightened focus on consumer technologies. However, the results have not been good. A growing number of firms are finding themselves unable to raise new funds or needing to be content with smaller funds. And while not completely abandoning investments in web and mobile companies, firms are starting to spend more time looking at such things as the data center, e-mail management, network performance, on-demand business intelligence and energy efficiency. But what does this resizing and refocusing mean going forward? Will capital be available for already-funded startups or will consolidation and fire sales continue? Will the industry’s remaining players crack the code for not only generating good returns, but also producing stand-alone publicly traded companies? And in looking at the entrepreneurial community what types of companies will get VCs most excited going forward?
Our panel of stalwart VCs gives their take on what they are seeing in the industry, what it means and how they and their firms are moving forward.

Panel Discussion | Finding Success Outside The U.S.: What Does It Take

Expanding into foreign markets has become critical for startups. The days of focusing on one market are long gone. But reaching these new markets takes both time and significant effort. Do it correctly and a company can be on its way to becoming a viable entity. Strike out or falter and a company's hope of landing additional customers or financing might be out of reach. In this special panel experts on the foreign business scene discuss what it takes for companies to succeed, the steps that can help and the missteps that be avoided.

Panel Discussion| Thinking Outside the Box: Why Liquidity Will Depend On Creativity

Generating returns has gotten increasingly difficult for venture investors. A few companies have managed to go public in recent months, but clearly the IPO window is not wide open. Acquisitions are occurring, but they are happening in smaller numbers and at reduced prices. VCs, though, can afford to be patient for only so long. So what can and should be doing in terms of trying to generate liquidity? Are their steps they can be taking to pull off an IPO? Are there ways to position companies so they are more attractive to acquirers? Would considering secondary buyers make sense? Listen as both investors and those focused on liquidity options discuss some of the steps that investors should consider taking with their startups.

1:10 PM Lunch & Panel Discussion | Corporate Technology: What Big Companies Really Want From Start-ups
Sponsored by SecondMarket

With the IPO window closed, the exit route for startups generally leads toward an acquisition. But getting a tech leader to make a play for a startup does not happen overnight. Corporations are keeping a close eye on not only what startups are doing, but what is needed internally as well. As a result, there may be a partnership or perhaps even an investment prior to a company being acquired. In this special panel executives from some of the leading technology companies talk about the areas where they are focused, the technologies they are seeking and what they want to see and hear from startups…
